Andy and Allison Burton, creators of Inspired by Cornwall

Can you tell us a bit about your background before you returned to Cornwall and decided to self-publish Inspired by Cornwall?

I previously worked as a PA in a large international manufacturing company, prior to moving to Cornwall with Andy, my husband. Upon relocating here, over ten years ago, and up to present, I work for a successful local multi-media business as PA to the Managing Director.

Andy has been an engineer all his working life and upon moving to Cornwall became a shift engineer at a local food manufacturing business in Scorrier.

Andy’s passion has always been his motorcycles and his photography. With my interest in photography and creative skills, it was a great opportunity to combine our love of photography and deep affection for Cornwall and to do something together and publish the results.

We have always taken a keen interest in supporting the community with sporting activities and taking part in charity events.

Why did you decide to create a book about Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly?

The beauty of St Michael’s Mount, sitting proudly in the bay and with one of the most beautiful islands in the world only a few miles away, is a constant reminder of how lucky we are to live and work here. We wanted to share the beauty that surrounds us on a daily basis and the precious memories that we have built up over the years.

With so many beautiful places to visit, how did you whittle down the final destinations that would go into the book?

We have visited so many beautiful areas of the Duchy, both inland and coastal. It was, of course, very difficult to choose them. We decided to feature our favourite destinations based upon the fact that they hold so many fond memories and that have significant interest to us. We also believe our choice of places and relevant accompanying subjects will portray Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly as such a wonderful inspirational place to visit and explore for all age groups.

How long did it take from start to finish to create Inspired by Cornwall. What obstacles did you encounter along the way?

Tresco

For about twelve months I did lots of research and collated material. I then finally decided to start putting the book together in April this year. From that point, I have spent over twenty hours per week writing and selecting the most appropriate photographs. Some photos were specifically taken for inclusion in the book.

As this was our first book, it was quite a learning curve for me because I really didn’t have any knowledge about the process, requirements and timelines. It would have been really helpful to have had a tick sheet to work with from the start.

Inspired by Cornwall has a very clean and crisp look to it. What was important to you in terms of design and production to get right?

My aim was to have a beautifully designed book with a timeless elegance that would portray a hint of luxury. Its size is ideal as a gift or a memento of just how stunning Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly really are and indeed something that would look great on any coffee table.

Who do you think will enjoy this book?

I believe there is something of interest in the book for everyone, whether flicking through the pages and gazing at the wonderful photographs of the natural beauty that surrounds us. Or using the book as inspiration for ideas of places to visit or even a holiday.

What advice would you give to other people thinking of self-publishing a book?

Firstly, they must be hugely passionate about the subject. Plus, you have to be very well organised and motivated to be able to do this. You have to be able to continue with regular employment and not compromise the work/home life balance.

If you had to choose, what would be your all-time favourite place to visit in Cornwall and the Isles of Scilly?

We have travelled to many exotic locations around the world and still find Tresco is the most beautiful of islands. Each year we very much look forward to returning to Tresco and are never disappointed.

We can’t wait for the Penzance/Tresco helicopter service to be reinstated so that we can spend even more time on the island.
